Our Story

Where it all began.

The Goose from the Blue Goose Logo

I was born a maker and creator just as my parents. I watched and helped my mom make clothing and quilts. I helped my dad with woodworking in his workshop. At 4 years old, I insisted that I could quilt too. Mama handed me a piece of gray lining from an old suit that she was repurposing. She told me I could sew with it. Mama thought that old gray piece of fabric would keep me busy for a while. I very quickly handed it back to her with it hemmed around the edges. That year she got me a cross stitching kit for my birthday. I finished it with my grandma over the next two days. From then on, I had a needle and thread in my hand or a sketchbook and pencil in my pocket. I was destined to be a maker.

My family spent many summers and part of my childhood in an old Blue Bird school bus. My dad named it the “Blue Goose”. It was a fun time during the summer months but when we had lived in it, it proved to be very cold in the winters. The sheet metal walls were the only thing between us and the howling winter winds. Our breath would create condensation and freeze on the walls. It was an icebox. My dad bought me a used 1958 Singer 404 sewing machine while we lived in the Blue Goose for $50. I used old bits of clothing to make quilts on that machine. I still use that machine today in my quiltmaking.

I began teaching a variety of art classes with 4-H when I was just 16 years old. I began my professional teaching career in 2001 in the public school system. I love teaching art and incorporating literature, math, and cultural narratives in my lessons and work.

I am a teaching artist. I offer art classes for personal enrichment and interpersonal connection. As a teaching artist, I am positive, flexible, and engaging.  I am prepared and professional at making art accessible to everyone.
